Canines of Character is a photography book project which celebrates each canine’s unique personality whilst helping to raise money for rescue dogs in need. Allira Fontana is a S ydney-based pet photographer who  spends most of her days photographing canines and creating custom artwork for her clients. Every Thursday however, you will find her volunteering at the Hawkesbury Companion Animal Shelter with fellow Rescue Hub volunteers.  Allira began volunteering in May 2015, and since then she has barely missed a Thursday! During her time there, she has made some life-long friends and they are just as passionate as her about saving shelter dogs. Brisbane based artist, Stephen Gallagher, usually spends his days painting people's pooches from his studio in Salisbury.  However after a trip to a local shelter last year, Stephen decided to use his paintbrush to represent the many dogs without a home in Brisbane and also inspire Australians to adopt.  The result is 100 oil portraits of 100 dogs that have come through Brisbane shelters in 2016 and 2017. "Having been a dog owner most of my life, I understand the unique bond that humans and dogs share. There is no doubt that humans benefit from the company of dogs and they, in turn, thrive on human contact and friendship.   A dog without a home is a tragic creature." Dog lovers are invited to help raise dollars for rescue Greyhounds by pre-ordering a new Australian children’s picture book via an exciting, new crowdfunding campaign launched on Chuffed.org  last week. The campaign will fund the production of Pointy Pembleton Visits the Dog Park , a children's picture book about a gregarious Greyhound character who shows children how to accept others that may be a little different. This crowdfunding campaign to help raise desperately needed funds for Greyhound Rescue Inc. has hit the $10,000 mark in an impressively short amount of time, raising two-thirds of its initial goal amount in the first three days! “We are so humbled and overwhelmed by the support that Pointy Pembleton has received. We knew this project was a great one, we knew that we had the backing of our friends and family who believed in us, but to see the support that has come flooding in has just been absolutely incredible.” said Nat Panzarino, the author of  Pointy Pembl...

Double Bay Dog Day is returning to Guilfoyle Park, Double Bay on Saturday 24th June, 2017 after a very successful first year event. This fundraising event will be hosted again by Pound Paws , in partnership with the Double Bay Chamber of Commerce . Greyhounds make great pets and with more dogs than ever needing homes, Adopt-a-Greyhound Month is the perfect time to consider adopting your next best friend. With hot debate last year about the industry and ongoing abuse revelations [ 1 ], the number of Greyhounds in need of homes is growing by the thousands, making this April’s Adopt-a-Greyhound Month more important than ever, says Greyhound Rescue (GR). “Our books are full. The  11th Hunter Animal Rescue Pets Picnic  has been rescheduled and will now be held on  Sunday 19th March 2017  at Newcastle Foreshore Park. With a quarter of a million healthy dogs and cats put down every year, the organisation will be educating dog and cat owners on how to look after their pets to ensure they don’t end up in the pound and put to sleep.  “A four-legged friend is a lifetime commitment that can bring you endless joy, and we urge the people of the Hunter to please save the life of one who's already at a pound by giving them a loving home,” said a  Hunter Animal Rescue  representative. RSPCA NSW are aiming to Clear the Shelter this weekend with $29 adoption fees state-wide for all animals great and small, regardless of age or species, in an attempt to find new homes for the hundreds of animals in care across the state. “It’s all about finding forever homes for all our animals and giving that extra incentive for people looking for a new pet a good reason to adopt, instead of shop through somewhere like Gumtree or backyard breeders,” comments RSPCA NSW Head of Animal Care Services Brendon Neilly. A menagerie of animals are looking for their forever homes: not just puppies and dogs, kittens and adult cats but pocket pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs , even livestock such as goats , Shetland ponies , pigs and ducks will all be available for adoption this weekend. Last year  583 animals were rehomed during Clear the Shelter , which was 81% of animals available for adoption.
