Frontier Pets heralds the future of ethical and healthy dog food in Australia with the recent release of their Pork and Beef raw freeze-dried varieties as well as natural dog treats.
Frontier Pet Food is freeze-dried, an environmentally friendly method that ensures the colours, flavours, smells and nutritional content remain intact. The process involves removing the water from the nutritional ingredients, which are then reconstituted when you add the water back in when you're measuring out a portion for your dog.
One of the benefits of a freeze-dried food is that it’s still raw, only dried, so you’re getting the benefits of a raw diet without the hassle of refrigeration.
Frontier Pet Food will reconstitute to four times its original dry weight. So if you're used to feeding dry kibble or raw/fresh meat, it will look like a small amount of food but it is correct so don't overfeed your dog.
How much your dog needs to eat to maintain a healthy body weight largely depends on his age, size, metabolic rate and activity level. A healthy dog will eat around 2-3% of their body weight. If your dog is a puppy up to 6 months old, you'll need to double the feeding quantity. However if your dog is elderly or very sedentary, you may wish to reduce the amount.
Measuring the right quantity is easy as your bag of food also comes with a handy collapsible scoop which doubles as a bag clip.
Based on our Belgian Malinois' weight of 29Kg and their active lifestyle, we opted for a 3% daily (of their body weight) feeding guideline. This worked out at around 87g (before the food is reconstituted) per meal (twice a day). Choosing the 2% guideline for our older dog, this worked out at around 58g per meal (twice a day). An electronic kitchen scale is essential especially if you're feeding a smaller dog.

Frontier Pets have also released a range of healthy raw freeze-dried dog treats which include the Paddywhack Beef Strips (100% free-range grass-fed beef) jam-packed with protein (68.4% crude protein) with no additives or preservatives.
The vision behind the brand is not only to deliver a superior pet food only using high-welfare ingredients, it also aims to raise public awareness of the true cost of factory farming. Every time you purchase a Frontier Pets product, you will be contributing directly and indirectly to improving animal welfare.

HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU FEED YOUR DOG?
How much your dog needs to eat to maintain a healthy body weight largely depends on his age, size, metabolic rate and activity level. A healthy dog will eat around 2-3% of their body weight. The centre of the scoop pops up to give you a full cup measure (237ml or around 50g).

HOW TO FEED RAW FREEZE-DRIED FOOD
Once we measured the appropriate amount of dried food, we simply added warm water and stirred. The ratio is equal part food to water, i.e. 1 cup of dried food requires 1 cup of water to reconstitute.
You only need to let the food stand for around 30 seconds. The food will maintain its shape and plump up a little but it will not soak up all the water. That's fine - your dog will lap up the tasty water (and lick their bowl clean) anyway! Should you have any reconstituted leftovers, these will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.
