Huskimo Sherpa Dog Coat - Review

Perfect for cold wet winter walks, the Huskimo Sherpa dog coat is waterproof, lined and reflective.

Huskimo is a relatively new Australian designer brand of pet apparel and dog accessories, launched in 2014. The brand finds its inspiration in our spectacular wide open spaces and our love of sharing the great outdoors with our canine friends. Their motto is "Original - Innovative - Striking - Honest" and these values underpin the collections that have been released so far.

Of course most parts of Australia do not get really cold by European standards however we do experience light frosts every winter and I can't imagine that our dogs enjoy the cold damp conditions any more than we do!

Queue the new Huskimo Dog Sherpa Coat to make our winter walks a lot more comfortable and enjoyable for our dogs... For the purpose of this trial, we selected the Birch Green design but the Ocean Blue and Mulberry colours are just as striking!

MAIN FEATURES

The outer shell of the Sherpa is using the new SilverClear Odour Protection fabric, which was chosen for its hypoallergenic and antibacterial properties.

This waterproof outer shell keeps your dog dry in all conditions whilst the SubZero fleece lining is light, soft and breathable to add extra warmth and comfort.

Apart from the obvious quality of all the fabrics used to make this coat, our favourite features were the
gusseted chest and side velcro straps, meaning the Sherpa actually hugged our dog's chest for a perfect fit, whilst allowing her total freedom of movement.

You can also turn the coat's collar all the way up for maximum protection on rainy days or down if it starts getting a bit warm during your walk.

There is a reinforced leash hole on the top of the coat which allowed us to clip a lead to our dog's harness worn underneath which is our preferred way of walking our Malinois.

Another clever little feature is the Light Loop so you can clip an LED Light on the back for added visibility - in addition to the reflective panels.

This is very handy if you let your dogs off the leash when hiking in the bush in low light conditions and it is a great safety feature during early morning or evening walks to avoid a possible collision with a vehicle.

The Huskimo® LED Light - a battery is included - provides visibility up to 800 metres and you can also select from three light speeds with just one touch. If your dog has a particular fondness for puddles or you get caught in the rain, it is also water-resistant (not waterproof).

According to the manufacturer, the Sherpa dog coat should withstand up to hundred industrial washes and retain its shape but it will take us a few years in order to comment on that particular point...

The Sherpa dog coat comes in three bright colours: Birch Green (our pick), Mulberry and Ocean Blue.

The Sherpa design is available in six sizes which will fit most dogs' back lengths (measuring from the neck to the tail), from 33cm up to 67cm.

The Huskimo 2017 autumn/winter collection includes many other dog coat styles as well as jumpers and snoods.

Sporn Marrow Chew Bone

The Sporn Marrow Chew Bone (originally called the Yuppie Puppy ) is a jerky-flavour filled chewable nylon bone, which promises to control tartar and plaque, assisting with your dog's dental health. After putting it to the test for a number of years with our three Belgian Shepherds, we can attest that it is great for the toughest of chewers and may even save some of your furniture or shoes. Especially recommended during the puppy phase, when your dog is constantly teething and needs something to chew. Chewing this bone is similar to brushing their teeth. As the nylon shreds, it becomes like bristles, removing tartar and plaque build-up from the teeth. These interactive dental chew toys are unique to most other flavoured nylon bones as the marrow is added after the bone has been moulded and cooled. After trialling other brands on the market, we found that the marrow makes the difference and keeps our dogs coming back for more. Our dogs can surely smell it long before they can t...
